The self-aligning ball bearing has two rows of balls and a common concave sphered raceway in the outer ring. The bearing is consequently self-aligning and insensitive to angular misalignments of the shaft relative to the housing. It is particularly
suitable for applications where considerable shaft deflections or misalignment are to be expected. Additionally, the self-aligning ball bearing has the lowest friction of all rolling bearings, enabling it to run cooler even at high speeds.
We produce self-aligning ball bearings to several designs. These are
– open bearings of the basic design
– sealed bearings
– open bearings with an extended inner ringThis ball bearing type is recommended when the shaft’s alignment and housing are complex and may flex. The outer ring has a spherical raceway, and its center of curvature coincides with that of the bearing; therefore, the axis of the inner circle, balls, and cage can deflect to some extent around the bearing center. Pressed steel cages are usually used. Since the contact angle is slight, the axial load capacity is low. Under normal loads, the permissible dynamic misalignment is approximately 0.07 to 0.12 radian (4 to 7 degrees).
